Naturopathy

A healthcare approach based on using natural therapies, diet and lifestyle interventions, ancient cultural wisdom & current scientific research to prevent disease & treat underlying conditions, as well as their symptoms. Naturopaths understand that people are ‘whole’ beings who require individualised & comprehensive health solutions.

At Discover Health, we use a wide range of naturopathic tools, including the following:

Herbal medicine

Herbal or plant remedies (phytotherapy) have been used as medicine throughout the world for thousands of years. Depending on the plant, its properties & the treatment purpose, different parts may be used, including roots, stems, leaves, flowers, berries/fruits, seeds, or bark. Herbals can be applied externally or taken internally, & prepared in various forms, such as teas, tinctures, oxymels, oils, poultices, compresses, ointments, creams, capsules, & tablets. Herbs may be used to relieve disease symptoms, support organ function & complement other natural & conventional treatment regimes.

We believe in using knowledge acquired through traditional use & quality scientific research to assist us in selecting the herbal medicines best suited to your needs.

Functional testing

To accurately assess your state of health, uncover hidden imbalances, & track your progress, we may use a range of specialised & medical tests. These assist with targeting treatments & applying preventative therapeutic interventions which reduce risk of serious illness & support health & wellbeing.

They may include (e.g.):

  • Allergy, Sensitivity & Intolerance testing

  • Hormone testing

  • Hair mineral analysis

  • Intestinal permeability testing

  • Liver function testing

Ecotherapy

Ecotherapy, also known as nature-assisted or green therapy, is a term used to describe therapeutic interventions or practices which use the power of mindfully interacting with nature to facilitate healing & personal growth. It is based on the understanding that humans are part of the natural world & possess an innate love of nature & a desire to maintain a deep & meaningful connection with it. Increased exposure to natural settings is seen as integral to reawakening consciousness of this intimate relationship, enabling improvements in health & wellbeing to occur.

The focus of ecotherapy is on the nature-based activity, not the person or their mental or physical condition, although traditional psychotherapeutic techniques may be incorporated into the client’s exploration of their emotional relationship with nature (ecopsychotherapy) to assist with specific mental health challenges & cultivate personal awareness. Whilst nature is always central to the healing process, ecotherapy may be experienced in indoor or outdoor settings & modified to allow for individual needs & preferences.

Examples of guided or formal ecotherapy sessions include forest bathing (shinrin-yoku), wilderness/adventure therapy, animal-assisted or pet therapy, horticultural or farm therapy, & outdoor movement classes.

There are numerous, well-researched mental, emotional, physical, & social benefits of ecotherapy, including increased energy, improved emotional regulation & calm focus (cognitive restoration), greater self-confidence & adaptive coping skills, healthier personal relationships, sensory fulfillment, enhanced longevity, & a renewed sense of purpose.

Walk & Talk therapy

Walk & Talk therapy involves walking through beautiful natural landscapes (e.g. beachside trails & parks), led by a qualified & dedicated therapist. It is perfect for anyone wanting to get active outdoors with the opportunity to share day-to-day concerns & gain a healthier, more positive outlook. These sessions are limited to ‘little t therapy’. If you require more intensive mental health assistance (‘big T therapy’), we can refer you to more suitable counselling & support services.

Walk & Talk therapy is currently available in selected areas on the Gold Coast, in Queensland, Australia. If you are interested, please contact us for more information. We are excited to be bringing this new service to our clients & hope to see you soon!
